[GUIDE] How to Write Product Description for eCommerce SEO

how to write product description ecommerce

If you do eCommerce, running a dropshipping store, or selling the private label products, the product description on the single product page has always played a key role in SEO.

When most of your competitors copy and paste the product description from manufacturers, it is your chance now to overrank them by pulling down the unique and creative description. Google always favors unique content and gives a better ranking position.

Yeah, we all know that writing unique content will cost them time and effort. So, in this article, I will reveal a few tips on how to compose the product description to optimize your eCommerce SEO campaign.

Rewrite the Original Description

Rewriting is straight forward to create unique content. For most of the products you promote, you might find some description on the manufacturers’ page, then copy the relevant text and rewrite everything into yours.

You can also find the relevant content by searching the competitors. Enter the product keywords into Google then open the same product URL you are promoting. From your competitors’ page, you can collect useful information then rewrite it into unique ones.

Add Product Features

Once you have an information riched product description, then follow a list of product features.

The product features can include everything relevant to the product itself, e.g dimension, colors, sizes, and so on. Just list down a group of product features to expand the product description.

Digest More Content from Featured Snippets, Common Questions, and What People Ask for

Apart from competitors scraping, you might also notice some other information sources you can make use of while searching in Google.com.

Featured Snippets is an information box that usually appears on the top of search results. Depending on the product, you might not always find the Featured Snippets box.

However, you can also move down to check the “What People Ask for” section. Here you will find a question list that is usually related to your product.

Those are the perfect content source to add to your product description page. You don’t have to include all questions, but pick out 2 or 3 questions that are mostly concerned by your customers. Write down 2 or 3 sentences for each question, which would be fine.

The best question you include is those with no answer or lack of enough information. You have a big chance to get your featured question in the snippets box if you write down a detailed answer.

If those questions are not straight to your product, you can broaden the keywords so the better chance to have more exact questions.

By searching related questions, you also have a chance to explore more other relevant products as those questions are not always straightly targeting your product.

Final Words

I totally understand why people tend to copy past product descriptions, as creating a unique and detailed description does take lots of time and effort for research and to put everything together.

That would be especially hard if you have hundreds or even thousands of products in your store. In that case, you might have a different marketing strategy.

However, if you do SEO, I would suggest starting the single or just a few products, then write down the creative and unique product description to adapt to your SEO marketing campaign. Trust me, all your hard work and effort would be paid off afterward.
